Merry Beach Residence

Inspired by curved planes and dynamic form, this beach house for a retiring Canberra family explores the notion of Australian beach house vernacular appropriate to its environment.

The aesthetic that emerges is derived from the natural physics of its context, not mimicking current building or town planning fashion. Natural light and ventilation paths are ever-changing with the time of day and change of season. These are captured by a series of curved roofs that guide the natural light and breeze through the envelope with carefully located window openings.

The result is a sustainable, living building that’s able to breathe and is proud of its natural surroundings.
