Blending Heritage with Modern Living

The Griffith Home is a project that reflects Adhami Pender Architecture’s commitment to thoughtful, client-centred design.

A seamless blend of heritage charm and modern functionality, this Canberra home is a testament to trust, collaboration, and the power of a well-defined brief.

When the clients first reached out to APA, they were living in Singapore, dreaming of the perfect home for their family’s future. They hadn’t yet purchased a property, but they wanted a place that would adapt to their needs as their children grew—a home built for both the present and the years to come.

From the beginning, the clients engaged APA for guidance in selecting a property that aligned with their vision. After months of searching, they settled on a 1950s Canberra residence, captivated by its classic architectural appeal and strong street presence.

Rather than opting for a complete knockdown and rebuild, APA proposed an alteration and addition approach, preserving the essence of the1950s home while introducing modern improvements.

From Concept to Reality: A Design That Stood the Test of Time

The design process began before the property was even purchased. Together with the owners, APA developed the project brief and identified the opportunities and constraints potential of the site. A concept design was developed, and a project budget was established to enable the owners to purchase the property at auction. The concept design immediately resonated with the clients. It aligned so naturally with their vision that they felt confident moving forward and ultimately were successful in acquiring the property.

One of the most defining elements of the project is the library and family room. Originally envisioned as two separate spaces, it evolved into a single, multi-functional area—a partial octagon-shaped retreat designed to feel warm, inviting, and intimate.

To enhance natural light, APA designed a double-glazed glass atrium that brings daylight into the south-facing living areas—a strategic move that ensures the home remains bright and airy year-round while also prioritizing thermal efficiency.

A Rich & Textured Interior Design

When interior designer Kendall joined the project, the architectural footprint was already established, allowing her to focus on how the home would feel and function. The clients had a distinct vision—Alice in Wonderland meets European manor house, with a playful yet elegant blend of colour, texture, and heritage charm.

A major inspiration came from Cara Delevingne’s eclectic home, which the clients admired for its bold use of colour, quirky elements, and layered textures. While adapting the concept to a family-friendly, functional space, Kendall curated an interior that felt sophisticated yet full of character.

Reflecting on the project, APA highlights the power of a well-developed brief. When clients are engaged, thoughtful, and trusting of the process, the result is a home that feels deeply connected to its owners.

As Nabil, the project’s lead architect, puts it: “This house is not about trends; it’s about creating a space that embodies the spirit of the people who live in it. We designed this home for them, not for us.”

With a perfect balance of respect for the past and vision for the future, the Griffith Home stands as a timeless example of what Adhami Pender Architecture does best—creating homes that truly belong to the people who inhabit them.
